Report Card Information

Dear Families:

As shared at Back to School Night, we are piloting new ELA instructional materials in grades K-5. This resource offers a rigorous, knowledge building approach for our learners, engaging students in reading, writing, listening and speaking. While our commitment to addressing essential ELA standards has not changed, the order and manner in which standards are assessed in this pilot may be different than in past years. As such, you may not see a reported measure for every ELA standard on your child’s report card. Please also refer to the comments provided by your child’s teacher, as well as ongoing communication and conferencing, regarding your child’s progress in ELA. Thank you for your continued support and partnership.

SJPS Elementary Team

**Also, please note when we are reporting on standards, we are measuring where that student is in relation to the end of fifth grade. It is quite common to still need support and be a Level 2 on a 5th grade standard at the end of the first trimester. We will continue to report on all of the literacy standards throughout the year so you can see how your student is progressing. Please let us know if you have any questions.

Language Dive → Perfect Verb Tense

So, what is the perfect verb tense? Here is a really short video clip that explains the different perfect verb tense forms:

How to Use Perfect Verb Tenses. Perfect verb tense focuses on connecting actions in the past to the present and order of events.

Students have also practiced on IXL with the skill “Form the Perfect Verb Tense.” Here is a chart we made to help them.

Tips for IXL Practice:

OO.10 Form the perfect verb tenses

Past Perfect Tense

had + past tense verb

“She/we have walked..”

Present Perfect Tense

Single subject →  has + past tense verb

“She has walked…”

Plural subject →  have + past tense verb

“We have walked…”

Future Perfect Tense

will have + past tense verb

“She/we will have walked…”

Using the perfect verb tense will be a part of the next assessment that will happen towards the end of this week or the beginning of next week.

Math Touchpoint

Last week, students learned all about how to multiply a fraction by a whole number and a whole number by a fraction. They are doing so well in solving each equation and finding an answer; however, when it comes to reading models and our conceptual understanding, we are in need of additional practice. I have left the practice pages from last week attached below to be used for an additional touchpoint with your student(s). Also, as we head into Thanksgiving, feel free to relate students’ math learning with your meal. This real world experience often helps solidify learning and develops stronger conceptual understanding!

We are working on dividing fractions this week - here are a few examples of real world issues!

For example:

  •  If you have one turkey shared between 10 people, each person would receive 1/10 of the turkey because 1 10 = 1/10.  Reminder: I divide the turkey, not the people.

  • If you have 10 pies to share on Thanksgiving and you share them equally among 5 family members, each family remember would receive 2 pies because 10 5 = 10/5 or 2 .

  • If you have ⅓ of the casserole leftover and want to send it home with 3 friends, how much of the whole casserole would each friend take home? Each friend would take home 1/9 of the casserole because1/3 3 = 1/9.

  • If you have 5 feet of garland to decorate your house and you need to cut the garland into ⅓ foot pieces, how many pieces will you have? 15 pieces because 5 1/3 = 15.

As a helpful reminder to students, we use the saying:

“If it (the equation) starts with a whole number, it must end with a whole number. If it starts with a fraction, it must end with a fraction.”
