What will fifth graders be learning this week?

  • Positivity Project Focus: Love of Learning

  • Literacy: Module 2, Unit 1: Building Background Knowledge on the Rainforest

    • Summarizing Informational Text

  • Math: Unit 4: Multiplying & Dividing Multi-Digit Whole Numbers

  • Social Studies: Colonization:

    • Fur Trade in the Middle Colonies

    • Quakers in Pennsylvania

  • Science: Watery Planet: When you turn on the faucet, where does the water come from?

Reading Homework:

  • Please read at least 25 minutes each day.

    • Consider reading and discussing a book together.

    • Ask:

      • What happened in your book today?

      • What message do you think the author is trying to convey with this story?

Math Touchpoint:

This week in math, we are starting Unit 4: Multiplying and Dividing Multi-Digit Whole Numbers. In 5th grade, we focus on learning the standard algorithm for  multiplication.

As we continue to make headway in multiplying multi-digit numbers using the standard algorithm, fact fluency is still tripping up many students. Making fact fluency and accuracy a priority at home makes a huge difference in student’s ability to problem solve efficiently. Using multiplication/division flashcards, making fact practice into a game, or simply going through one or two of the trickier facts (7, 8, 9, 12) per day and reviewing them during transition times could be a good place to start.

If you’d like a refresher on the standard algorithm, please see this video.

  • Literacy: Module 2: Biodiversity in the Rainforest

    • Unit 1: Building Background Knowledge: Why Scientists Study the Rainforest

    • Focus on Text Structure, Inference, and Citing Evidence

Reading Homework:

  • Please read at least 25 minutes each day.

    • Consider reading and discussing a book together.

    • Ask:

      • What happened in your book today?

      • What message do you think the author is trying to convey with this story?

Math Touchpoint:

Students will complete their Unit 3 Assessment late this week! Please look for those assessments to come home in their Friday folder this week and feel free to let me know what questions you have.

Next in math, we are beginning Unit 4: Multiplying and Dividing Multi-Digit Whole Numbers. In fifth grade, we focus on learning the standard algorithm for  multiplication and the partial quotient method for long division.

What typically trips students up when learning both of these concepts is their multiplication and division accuracy & fluency.
