What will fifth graders be learning this week? 

  • Positivity Project Focus: Other People Mindset - Supporting Others  

  • Literacy: Read short literary texts about how natural disasters impact humans.

    • Use visuals to help with meaning, tone, and beauty of the text.

    • Identify synonyms, antonyms, and homographs.

  • Math: Unit 6- Understanding and Utilizing Line Plots & Comparing Products; Begin 5th Grade Math Review

  • Social Studies: Continuing our study of the Constitutional Convention and the Constitution’s ratification

  • Science:  Back to Space: Gravity on Other Planets


Testing Season

As mandated by the state of Michigan, fifth grade students will take the M-STEP for ELA, Math, Science, and Social Studies to look at their learning over their elementary years. (Results usually are not released until the fall.)

  • Tuesday, 4/8 - Science M-STEP

  • Tuesday, 4/15 - Social Studies M-STEP

  • Tuesday, 4/22 & Wednesday, 4/23 - ELA M-STEP

  • Tuesday, 4/29 - Math M-STEP - Only one more M-STEP to go!


Students will also take our local assessments, NWEA Reading and NWEA Math. (Results to these assessments are available within 24 hours.)

  • Tuesday, May 6th - NWEA ELA

  • Tuesday, May 13th - NWEA Math  


What can you do to help your student? Encourage healthy sleeping and eating habits. Drinking water is crucial to the brain as well. Last, consider doing something fun on Tuesday evenings to celebrate a day of hard work.

  • Thursday, May 29th - Half Day & 5th Grade Farewell Breakfast

  • Friday, May 30th - Half day/last day & Awards Ceremony 


Fifth Grade Teacher/Student Farewell Breakfast

While it is not until May 30th, this event will be here before we know it. Fifth-grade teachers and students will eat breakfast together in the cafeteria and have a special send-off. We are asking for ONE baby picture of your 5th grader. Please email a picture to your student’s homeroom teacher:

  • Math: Unit 6, Section B: Add & Subtract Fractions with Unlike Denominators

  • Social Studies: Key concepts in the Constitution; How the Constitution was written

  • Science: Writing Public Service Announcements about Natural Disasters/Earth Day

Math Touchpoint

This week students will continue to work toward mastery of adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators. This included adding and subtracting mixed numbers with unlike denominators. We will have a Section B checkpoint to check in on student learning this week!
