Thank you for your continued support throughout this school year. We have felt appreciated and supported in this partnership. What a wonderful group of students we’ve had the pleasure of teaching!

This blog is our final blog of the year, with important reminders for this LAST week of elementary school. 


What will fifth graders be learning this week?

Dates to Know - This Week & Beyond

  • Monday, May 26th - No School in Honor of Memorial Day

  • Tuesday, May 27th - Full Day 

    • 1:15 - 3:15 P.M.  Walk & Play at Kiwanis

  • Wednesday, May 28th - NO Late Start

    • 10:30 5th Grade Kickball Game vs. Staff 

    • Half Day (Dismissal at 12:09 p.m)

  • Thursday, May 29th - Half Day & 5th Grade Farewell Breakfast (Dismissal at 12:09 p.m)

  • Friday, May 30th - Half day/Last day & Awards Ceremony at 10:45 a.m - Parents are invited. (Dismissal at 12:09 p.m)


*Report cards will be mailed home during the month of June. 



End of the Year Events

  • Tuesday = Kiwanis Park - On Tuesday, we will walk from Lincoln to Kiwanis Park to hangout and enjoy the outdoors together. Students should dress for the weather and bring a labeled bottle of water.  Students are able to bring equipment from home to play with at the park.

  • Wednesday = Kickball Game - On Wednesday, we will have our annual 5th grade vs. Lincoln Staff Kickball Game. Parents can come watch along the fence.

  • Thursday = Fifth Grade Teacher/Student Farewell Breakfast- Just a reminder that this breakfast is for the teachers and students to have a special time together. Students should dress nicely for this event (see above for the official invite). The only parents in attendance will be volunteers, setting up and cleaning up the event. 

  • Friday = Awards Ceremony - Please join us for the end of the year awards at 10:45 in the Lincoln gymnasium. Students will be recognized for their achievements and each 5th grader will be announced by name (Great photo moment!). Afterwards, students will take a lap outside, return inside to get artwork, and then return to their classrooms. Parents may pick up students from their homerooms after the conclusion of the program.

  • Rent-a-Supply: Budgeting for classroom supplies throughout a few days

  • Playing Project Wild ecosystem games in science

  • Studies of various novels as a class

  • Solving math problems to reveal mystery pictures

  • Field Trip to the Air Zoo

  • Getting Bear tickets and celebrating positive behavior with extra recesses, pajama days, hat days, a movie, and sometimes even a special treat.

Math Touchpoint

This week we will continue to review 5th-grade standards to ensure they are prepared for their transition to middle school. 


Essential Concepts for 5th graders to Know and Understand:

  • Solving equations using the Order of Operations

  • Place value within powers of 10

  • Accurately & fluently multiply large whole numbers using the standard algorithm or another strategy

  • Division of 4-digit numbers by 2-digit numbers

  • Decimal operations (add, subtract, multiply, divide)

  • Add & subtract fractions with unlike denominators

  • Multiply a fraction by a whole number

  • Divide a fraction by a whole number and divide a whole number by a fraction

  • Find the volume of a rectangular prism using the volume formula (length x width x height OR base x height)

  • Graph points in the first quadrant of the coordinate grid


Fifth Grade Step Up Day - Our Visit to Upton on May 22nd 

On Thursday, we will bus over to Upton and take a tour of the middle school. 

  • 10:30 Buses arrive at Lincoln to pick up our 5th graders

  • 10:45 Buses arrive at Upton


Activities at Upton Middle School:

  • Lunch will be from 11:27-11:52

The lunch that day will be chicken strips, fries, fruit, and milk. 

  • We will have a welcome from the administration.

  • We will have a student panel of current 6th-grade students

  • We will have a tour of various parts of the building/scavenger hunt.

  • We will have a presentation from our guidance team.

  • We will have a video presentation of the electives we offer at UMS.

  • We normally end with a Q & A with the administration.


  • 12:45 Buses pick up 5th graders to head back to Lincoln

  • 1:15 - 3:45 Field Day at Lincoln


Fifth Grade Teacher/Student Farewell Breakfast

Just a reminder that this breakfast is for the teachers and students to have a special time together.

  • Typically students dress nicely for this event (see below for official invite).

  • The only parents in attendance will be volunteers, setting up and cleaning up the event. 

May 30th -  Fifth-grade teachers and students will eat breakfast together in the cafeteria and have a special send-off.

What will fifth graders be learning this week?

  • Literacy: Continuing our research and discussions on Natural Disasters

  • Math: Unit 7: Shapes on the Coordinate Plane

  • Social Studies: The Three Branches of Government; The Bill of Rights

  • Science: Review Spaceship Earth Unit 


Testing Season

As mandated by the state of Michigan, fifth grade students will take the M-STEP for ELA, Math, Science, and Social Studies to look at their learning over their elementary years. (Results usually are not released until the fall.)

  • Tuesday, 4/8 - Science M-STEP

  • Tuesday, 4/15 - Social Studies M-STEP

  • Tuesday, 4/22 & Wednesday, 4/23 - ELA M-STEP

  • Tuesday, 4/29 - Math M-STEP

Students will also take our local assessments, NWEA Reading and NWEA Math. (Results to these assessments are available within 24 hours.)

  • Tuesday, May 6th - NWEA ELA

  • Tuesday, May 13th - NWEA Math  ONE MORE TO GO!


What can you do to help your student? Encourage healthy sleeping and eating habits. Drinking water is crucial to the brain as well. Last, consider doing something fun on Tuesday evenings to celebrate a day of hard work.

Math Touchpoint

As we come to the end of the year, we will focus on reviewing 5th-grade standards to ensure they are prepared before students transition to middle school.
