Math Touchpoint
As we come to the end of the year, we will focus on reviewing 5th-grade standards to ensure they are prepared before students transition to middle school. We have also started a review of shapes and the hierarchy of shapes. We have also introduced students to the concept of the coordinate plane. Keep an eye out for your student’s assessment that made its way home this weekend about adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators.
Essential Concepts for 5th graders to Know and Understand:
Solving equations using the Order of Operations
Place value within powers of 10
Accurately & fluently multiply large whole numbers using the standard algorithm or another strategy
Division of 4-digit numbers by 2-digit numbers
Decimal operations (add, subtract, multiply, divide)
Add & subtract fractions with unlike denominators
Multiply a fraction by a whole number
Divide a fraction by a whole number and divide a whole number by a fraction
Find the volume of a rectangular prism using the volume formula (length x width x height OR base x height)
Graph points in the first quadrant of the coordinate grid
Fifth Grade Teacher/Student Farewell Breakfast
Just a reminder that this breakfast is for the teachers and students to have a special time together.
Typically students dress nicely for this event (see below for official invite).
The only parents in attendance will be volunteers, setting up and cleaning up the event.
May 30th - Fifth-grade teachers and students will eat breakfast together in the cafeteria and have a special send-off. We are asking for ONE baby picture of your 5th grader. Please email a picture to your student’s homeroom teacher:
Mr. Werner: lwerner@sjschools.org
Mrs. Karpus-Lawrence: kkarpus@sjschools.org
Mrs. Kern: mkern@sjschools.org
Please send in baby pictures by this Friday, May 16th, if you have not done so already.
