 Happy October!

What will fifth graders be learning this week?

  • Positivity Project Focus: “Creativity”

  • Literacy:

    • Interactive Read-Aloud: Esperanza Rising

    • Summarizing

    • Expanding Vocabulary

  • Math: Understanding Fractions as Division

  • Social Studies: Eastern Woodlands, Great Plains, Southwest, and Pacific Northwest Indigenous groups

Book Club

On behalf of Mrs. Gruchot:

Lincoln Lunch Time Book Club

Leveled Reading – Ms. Eyman Mustafa – Lincoln Elementary School

Do you like to read books and then discuss them with friends? Well, join our book club and meet every month to talk about books!  Join Mrs. Gruchot for a lunchtime book club (lunch & recess) to discuss some really good books!

Who: 4th and 5th Graders

Where: Our Media Center

When:  Once a month during lunch and lunch recess (bring your lunch!)

The expectation is that students in the book club will read the selected book for the month. Our discussions are much more meaningful when all students read the story and are ready to talk about it!  Remember, even if you do not like a book, you will still need to read the book so you can join in the discussion.  Due to a limited number of copies of the books, the first 18 students with a signed permission slip, will receive a copy of the book. jgruchot@sjschools.org

Math Touchpoint:

We have begun our new unit all about fractions! Typically fractions can be conceptually tricky for students to grasp. To support your student’s learning at home, helping them connect fractions to everyday activities such as cooking, sharing, time, measurement, etc. is key. Currently we are working on reviewing fair share problems where students identify what fraction of a whole each person would receive.

For example: 3 people would like to share 2 cookies. What fraction of the cookies will each person receive? The division expression to represent this would be 2 ∻ 3. Each friend would receive of the cookies.  A representation of this could look like:

Fall Student-Led Conference Sign Ups:

This round of conferences will take place with your student’s homeroom teacher. If you have questions or concerns about the content areas being taught during switches and your student’s progress in those areas, please contact Ms. Griffith for Math, Ms. Karpus for Social Studies, and Mrs. Kern for Science.

Safety Patrol

Is your student interested in volunteering time before or after school to help with patrolling the sidewalks? Please see information below:

Dear Families,

If your child has any interest in participating in Safety Patrol this year, please have them attend an informational meeting with Mrs. Fiesbeck (Room 107) on Tuesday, October 1st at 8:15 a.m. If, after hearing about how Safety Patrol will work this year, your child is interested, this form will need to be completed before they will be given a post. Forms need to be completed by Friday, October 4th.

On Tuesday, October 8 from 3:55 pm-4:15 p.m. there will be a Kickoff Meeting in Mrs. Fiesbeck's classroom. If you have any questions please reach out to Mrs. Fiesbeck directly at lfiesbeck@sjschools.org

Missing School = Missing Learning Opportunities

  • Missing school sometimes is unavoidable. When it does happen, please remind your student to check in with all three teachers for work that needs to be made up after returning. We try to keep up, but we would also like students to take initiative too. Let us know if you have any questions. Thanks!

Homework:

  • Please read at least 25 minutes each day.

    • Consider reading and discussing a book together.

    • Ask:

      • What did you learn about the main character?

      • What did that chapter make you wonder?

 Week 5 in Fifth Grade

What will fifth graders be learning this week?

  • Positivity Project Focus: “Purpose”

  • Literacy:

    • Interactive Read-Aloud: Esperanza Rising

    • Main Idea & Supporting Details

    • Summarizing

  • Math: Volume of Composite Shapes & Volume Assessment

Our first math assessment will take place later this week and will cover:

  • volume using unit cubes

  • volume using the volume formulas (length x width x height OR base x height)

  • volume of composite shapes

  • Social Studies: Origins of the Indigenous Americas; What is Culture?; Mapping Cultural Regions

  • Science: Mystery #2: What Do Plants Eat?

Math Touchpoint:

Students have been doing a wonderful job putting their understanding of volume to work! To help your student prepare for the math assessment on Tuesday, please consider:

  • Reviewing volume vocabulary with your student: length, width, height, base

  • Looking at rectangular prisms in everyday life (cereal boxes, pencil boxes, books, etc.) and having your student identify the length, width, and height

  • Measuring the length, width, and height of the real life rectangular prisms and writing out the formulas together

  • Putting two of the rectangular prisms together and adding the volumes to find the additive, or composite, volume of the whole figure

  • Ask your student to show you their IXL Skill Plan for Illustrative Math Unit 1

  • If you are looking for additional practice for your student, k5learning.com has some great additional practice problems with answer keys. Also, if you’d like, you may view this video for additional support.

Fall Student-Led Conference Sign Ups:

This round of conferences will take place with your student’s homeroom teacher. If you have questions or concerns about the content areas being taught during switches and your student’s progress in those areas, please contact Mr. Werner for Math, Mrs. Lawrence for Social Studies, and Mrs. Kern for Science.

Reading Directions

  • One of the biggest mistakes we are seeing (and often see this time of the year) is not reading directions carefully or not answering both parts to a question. We are seeing this in multiple classes throughout the day.

  • Students could be encouraged to use highlighters or to circle important parts of the question.

  • Students could also be prompted to re-read the question and answer together to make sure their answers make sense.

Reminders:

  • Please leave toys and play equipment at home.

  • If students need to contact parents, they may ask their classroom teacher to do so. Students are not to use personal phones or communicate with smartwatches during the school day. Thank you!

  • Snacks that come into each 5th grade classroom must be nut-free to ensure the safety of all our students. Thank you for your help with this.

  • If you would like to celebrate a birthday, let’s choose non-food options.

Homework:

  • Please read at least 20 minutes each day.

    • Consider reading and discussing a book together.

    • Ask:

      • What was this chapter mostly about?

      • What details support that idea?

  • For an upcoming Social Studies project, each student will need a cardboard toilet paper roll. If you can collect some and send them to school, have your child bring them to Mrs. Lawrence’s classroom! We will need them in about two weeks, so plenty of time to collect! Thank you!

A Final Note

We know your students are up to great things outside of school as well! If they have any games, matches, meets, performances, concerts, etc. that are in the area, please let us know. We’d love a schedule of events sent to our email. Though we can’t promise to make it to all of the events, we’d love to try to attend something outside of school to support your student! Thank you!
