Week 3 in Fifth Grade
What will fifth graders be learning this week?
Positivity Project Focus: “Open-Mindedness”
ELA - Reading Esperanza Rising and the “Universal Declaration of Human Rights,” Finding the Main Idea & Summarizing
Math: Introduction to Volume
Social Studies: Reviewing Geography concepts
Science: Starting “Web of Life” which includes Food Chains, Producers, and Consumers
NWEA Reading - Wednesday, September 11th
Students will take the Reading assessment Wednesday, September 11. Please help students do their best by encouraging good sleep, having a good breakfast, and chatting with them about using this assessment to show what they know. An extra reminder that it is O.K. (and even expected) that they will not know all of the answers often goes a long way! Thank you!
Back to School Night - Monday, September 16th
We are looking forward to you joining us on September 16 to discuss all things 5th grade! This is a parent/guardian only event. Fifth grade will present from 6:45-7:30 p.m. in homerooms. See you soon!
Friday Folders
This year students will be bringing home mail on Fridays in their Friday Folder. Please look through their mail for graded work, tests, permission slips, and school information each week.
Update on Switching Classes
Switching classes is off to a great start. Our switches happen after lunch recess. Students are being walked through what to bring to each class, the expectations for traveling from one room to another, and what is expected in each room. Please let us know if you have any questions.
Birthdays
Birthdays: We love to celebrate birthdays! For students who would like to celebrate birthdays in our class please bring in non-food items, for example instead of cupcakes, maybe pencils. Sometimes parents put together little gift bags. These are just ideas. There is no obligation to send anything!
Homework:
We encourage students to read for 20 minutes each day.
After your student reads, ask:
Which part was your favorite today?
What do you think will happen next?

Mr. Werner’s Classroom Wish List:
For an upcoming Social Studies project, each student will need a cardboard toilet paper roll. If you can collect some and send them to school, have your child bring them to Mrs. Lawrence’s classroom! We will need them in about four weeks, so plenty of time to collect! Thank you!
Want to Volunteer in 5th Grade?
Thank you to the parents who have volunteered so far. If you would still like to volunteer, we are still in need of someone to help with copies every other Monday morning. Please send an email to Mrs. Kern: mkern@sjschools.org, if you are interested.
**Please complete and submit the Volunteer Background Check Consent Form before helping in the classroom, attending a class party, or volunteering in the school.**
